Thomas I. Barnett

Tom is one of the nation’s leading experts in the field of electronic discovery and data management. He has advised clients and served as an electronic discovery expert in some of the nation's largest civil, regulatory and criminal matters in the financial services, banking, energy, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, automobile manufacturing and tobacco industries.

Before joining AlixPartners, Tom was Special Counsel at the firm of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP where he founded and led the Electronic Discovery & Compliance Department. His practice focused on implementing and executing best practices in data discovery and regulatory compliance. He was responsible for overseeing both internal processes and consulting with clients on litigation and regulatory compliance matters. Prior to joining S&C, Tom was the senior executive in charge of operations for the electronic discovery division of the largest business process outsourcing company in Asia in addition to serving as the corporation's General Counsel.

Tom was an editorial board member of the highly influential treatise on electronic data discovery, The Sedona Principles: Best Practices Recommendations & Principles for Addressing Electronic Document Production. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Georgetown University Advanced E-Discovery Institute and is a Co-chair of the E-Discovery Certification Committee; the BNA E-Discovery Expert Witness Directory Committee; the Board of Editors of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model Project, the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution.

A frequent speaker on electronic data management topics, Tom has provided training sessions to judges, in-house and outside counsel and other legal professionals. In 2006, Tom received the Burton Award for Legal Achievement.

Tom is a graduate of the Cornell Law School where he served on the Board of Editors of the Cornell Law Review. He also holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin.
