Alan is an experienced corporate restructuring specialist who, for almost 20 years, has managed all aspects of the financial restructuring process, including developing business plans, performing valuations and structuring and negotiating plans of reorganization. He has provided these services to companies and their management and directors, and also to financial institutions and creditors’ committees, across a wide variety of industries.
Alan has been involved in dozens of restructurings and out-of-court workouts in the US, Europe, and Latin America including: Aeromexico/Mexicana, Barney’s, Borden Chemicals & Plastics, Eastern Air Lines, Enron, KB Toys, KCS Energy, Metallgesellschaft, Oxford Automotive, Paging Network do Brasil, Payless Cashways, Pillowtex and USG.
Alan recently led a restructuring advisory team at Remy International, a Tier 1 automotive supplier that restructured through a landmark 59-day pre-packaged Chapter 11. The Turnaround Management Association (TMA) has recognized Alan and the AlixPartners team with its Large Company Transaction of the Year award for 2008 for the successful Remy restructuring.
Previously, he served as an advisor to Dana Corp., another large Tier 1 supplier and the largest US bankruptcy filer in 2006. His work at both Remy and Dana has included pre-bankruptcy planning, cash management and forecasting, business and strategic planning and creditor information management.
Before joining AlixPartners, Alan was a managing director at Giuliani Capital Advisors LLC, formerly known as Ernst & Young Corporate Finance LLC when it was a subsidiary of Ernst & Young LLP (E&Y), where he led the firm’s secured lender services area. He spent over 20 years practicing with E&Y and was named a partner in the firm in 1995.
Alan received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, and he has completed an executive management program at the Kellogg Business School at Northwestern University.
Alan is currently the President and a member of the board of directors of the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors (AIRA), a national organization of over 2,000 professionals in this field. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Insolvency and Restructuring Advisor, for which he received the 1992 CIRA silver medal from AIRA. Alan is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI), where he has served as a contributing editor to the ABI Journal, and of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He is a frequent speaker and author on the subject of corporate restructuring.
