Leading eDiscovery Expert Joins AlixPartners
NEW YORK (Feb. 12, 2008) – AlixPartners LLP today announced the appointment of Thomas Barnett as a new managing director in the firm’s electronic discovery (“eDiscovery”) practice.
Barnett is one of the nation’s leading experts in the field of eDiscovery and data management. He has advised clients and served as an electronic-discovery expert in some of the nation’s largest civil, regulatory and criminal matters in the financial-services, banking, energy, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, automotive and tobacco industries.
Before joining AlixPartners, Barnett was special counsel at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, where he founded and led that firm’s electronic discovery and compliance department. His practice focused on implementing and executing best practices in data discovery and regulatory compliance. He was responsible for overseeing both internal processes and consulting with clients on litigation and regulatory-compliance matters. Prior to joining S&C, he was the senior executive in charge of operations for the electronic discovery division of the largest business-process outsourcing company in Asia, in addition to serving as that corporation's general counsel.
Barnett was a co-author and editorial board member of the highly influential treatise on electronic data discovery, The Sedona Principles: Best Practices Recommendations & Principles for Addressing Electronic Document Production. He serves on the advisory board of Georgetown University’s Advanced E-Discovery Institute, as well as co-chairing its eDiscovery certification committee; on the Bureau of National Affairs’ E-Discovery Expert Witness Directory Committee; on the board of editors of the Electronic Discovery Reference Model Project; and on the International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution.
A frequent speaker on electronic data-management topics, Barnett has provided training sessions to judges, in-house and outside counsel, and other legal professionals. He is a graduate of Cornell Law School, where he served on the board of editors of the Cornell Law Review. He also holds a bachelor’s degree with honors in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin. In 2006, he received the prestigious Burton Award for Legal Achievement from the U.S. Law Library of Congress.
“I’m very happy to be a part of AlixPartners’ eDiscovery practice,” said Barnett. “The firm’s U.S. and European experts include some of the most experienced legal and information-technology professionals in the world. The depth of the team here allows us to help clients establish defensible and cost-effective electronic discovery policies, processes and practices, and to offer a full range of electronic discovery services for litigation and regulatory compliance in this challenging and ever-changing legal environment.”
“AlixPartners’ team of highly experienced electronic discovery, forensics and data analytics professionals offer our clients an impressive spectrum of eDiscovery capabilities to meet the demands of today’s legal world,” said Michael Grindfors, the firm’s chief executive officer. “We are pleased that Tom is now part of that team. He joins Matt Cohen, an expert in strategic planning for litigation readiness for corporate clients; Mike Faraci, an expert in the use of technology in litigation environments; and Steve Ambort, an expert in discovery strategy and project management. Together with a team of highly experienced electronic discovery, forensics and data analytics professionals, this team’s capabilities are second to none.”
