Bines, Joel T.

Joel Bines is a business leader with a track record of successfully improving the performance of retailers, wholesalers and services companies.

Joel is an expert at leading complex operations and strategic revitalization programs that emphasize efficient organizational design, effective execution and a dynamic approach to sales and marketing. He has worked with a broad spectrum of retailers from purveyors of luxury to supermarkets and boutique specialty stores to “big-boxes”. He also has experience working with wholesalers of luxury products, housewares, personal care and gifts. and has also worked with services businesses ranging from technology to public relations.

Prior to joining AlixPartners, Joel spent four years as CEO of a venture-backed company. He helped lead the turnaround of Letts of London and the transformation of Montblanc into a lifestyle brand. He started his career with a marketing strategy firm serving retail and specialty consumer products companies.

  • Developing  and executing the operational and strategic turnaround plan for a 1,000 store, multi-banner $2B apparel retailer, that resulted a quadrupling of market value
  • Developing  and executing the operational and strategic turnaround plan for a dual-banner apparel retailer, that resulted a doubling of market value in less than a year
  • Leading a SG&A reduction and operational efficiency improvement program for a national luxury retail department store, that enjoyed a 16 percent SG&A reduction and paved the way for a significant rebound in profitability
  • Creating an organizational improvement plan for the $1.6B U.S. retail division of a specialty apparel company with more than 1,500 mall & outlet center stores
  • Leading store operations improvement during the turnaround of a 650-store “big-box” retailer.  The work helped generate $300M in EBITDA improvement and $2.75B in shareholder value
  • Managing the turnaround of private equity owned specialty wholesaler of sporting goods that doubled enterprise value in eight months
  • Managing the turnaround of a leading North American market research firm, which was sold with a two-and-a-half time improvement in enterprise value

Joel holds a Masters in Business Administration with distinction from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Bates College in Lewiston, ME.
