Schulte, Axel

Axel Schulte is a Managing Director at AlixPartners in the Turnaround and Restructuring practice. He joined the firm in 2005 and works from the Dusseldorf office. He is an experienced consultant and executive manager with more than 19 years of experience in the corporate restructuring and turnaround business. His background includes accounting, controlling, corporate finance, mergers and acquisition (M&A), cost management, and financial restructuring. He is particularly adept in the development of all aspects of restructuring and turnaround processes and in controlling the implementation process.

He has managed multiple restructuring and performance improvement projects in different industries, including:

  • Financial and operational restructuring of a European holiday resort and river cruise operator
  • Financial Restructuring and negotiation support for a global shipping company
  • Restructuring of a major German construction group including successful negotiation of bridge financing
  • Restructuring of a major German real estate and construction group
  • Restructuring of a major German fashion retail store chain including M&A assistance and balance sheet restructuring
  • Implementing a Full Potential Program with a German industrial packaging company including M&A assistance
  • Implementing a new controlling and pricing systems for a major global mineral oil company

In addition, Axel is an experienced interim manager. As a chief restructuring officer (CRO), he was responsible for the EBITDA improvement program at a German tourism group, as well as for treasury and program management at a European furniture producer.

Prior to joining AlixPartners, Axel was principal at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants in its competence centre restructuring & corporate finance group. Also during his professional career, he founded a technology company, and after three successful years, he sold his shares. He began his career as an audit manager at a mid-sized German audit company, where he led several auditing projects as well as international privatization, M&A and restructuring projects in South America and Eastern Europe.

He holds a doctorate in macroeconomics and a master‘s degree in business administration (MBA) from the University of Münster, Germany. He is a member of the German Chapter of the Turnaround Management Association and a frequent speaker and panelists on European Restructuring conferences. He is Co-author of a book, Stakeholder Management in Restructurings, releasing in June 2012.
