Our 2017 global restaurant consumer survey found that consumers overwhelmingly want to dine out more—but they don’t want to spend proportionally more. That’s a tall order for restaurants around the globe.

At a glance

  • Strategies for reducing restaurant spending vary from country to country. Some consumers will order cheaper or less food, and others plan to use coupons or join frequent diner programs.
  • It turns out that restaurants are fighting the share-of-wallet battle more often with retail and travel than with delivery, prepared foods, and meal kit offers.
  • 40% of consumers said they would order delivery from an establishment without pick-up or dine-in services. That suggests restaurant operators could enter markets in a different way.
