Derek is an economist with 30 years' experience in competition and regulatory matters. He has acted as a testifying expert witness on around 25 matters (of which five in 2025) before the High Court, Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT), the Competition and Markets Authority, various arbitration panels, as well as before the Swedish Patent Court, the South African Competition Tribunal, the Hong Kong Competition Tribunal, the Australian Federal Court and the European Commission. 

He has acted on a wide range of competition matters including abuse of dominance, quantification of anti-trust damages and the competitive effects of horizontal and vertical agreements.

He is a leading economic expert in the collective actions space, acting on behalf of defendants including Amazon, Visa, a power cables operator and a musical instrument OEM. He was the expert for Dr Kent relating to her excessive pricing claim in Kent v Apple and is acting in Coll v Google concerning the Play Store commission. He has acted as class quantum expert on various recent collective matters in the rail and sewerage sectors.

Derek was recently commended in the Lexology Guide for Competition Economists as a Global Elite Thought Leader.

He has a Master of Science (with distinction) in economics from the London School of Economics.
