Matt Clark, EMEA Retail Lead, comments on the May BRC-Sensormatic Footfall Monitor statistics

09 May 2025

“Today’s data reveals a welcome rise in retail footfall, brought on by a later Easter holiday and warm weather. Although this uptick is welcome, uncertainty still continues to cloud the sector. There remains a growing disconnect between positive early-year trading headlines and the underlying challenges facing the sector. And with good weather pulling sales forward, retailers could be bracing for a tough second half of the year.

“Businesses are contending with a challenging cost environment, from rising NI contributions to wage pressures. At the same time, investing in better tech, infrastructure and services is essential, but it adds further pressure when margins are already strained. During this time, protecting and enhancing cash flow is essential. As global trade dynamics evolve, now could be an opportune moment to review sourcing strategies and explore alternative markets to secure better deals. Difficult periods can have hidden opportunities and retailers who take proactive steps to strengthen their financial resilience will be well-placed to navigate any uncertainty.”
