Matt Clark, EMEA Leader of Retail at AlixPartners, comments on the May BRC-Sensormatic Footfall Monitor

05 June 2026

"While May delivered a modest month-on-month increase in footfall, offering some grounds for cautious optimism, UK footfall still remains below last year's levels. Overall, the broader retail picture remains challenging, with consumers continuing to navigate economic uncertainty and spending cautiously. While the recent sunny weather will have boosted demand for seasonal outdoor goods and groceries in May, the hottest days likely kept consumers away from physical retail stores and the high street.

"Looking ahead, retailers will be hoping to drive sales through opportunities such as Father's Day and a summer of major sporting events. However, while these moments can provide valuable short-term boosts, sustainable growth requires a deeper understanding of customer behaviour and differentiation from the competition. Retailers that use customer data effectively, strengthen loyalty programmes, and deliver more personalised in-store and omnichannel experiences will set themselves up to drive long-term engagement and resulting growth.”
