Dr Rafael Aigner is a competition economist with over ten years of experience advising on matters of antitrust, regulation and public policy. His expertise spans merger control before European and national authorities, abuse of dominance, cartel damages litigation and state aid cases, with particular experience in digital markets and network industries. He has assessed damages in landmark antitrust cases, including self-preferencing disputes and private enforcement under Germany's 'tipping paragraph'. He was a lead economist in a major multinational cartel damages case, authoring expert reports submitted to courts across multiple jurisdictions. 

Rafael has worked on policy reports for the UK Competition and Markets Authority and the European Commission. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals. He has co-authored the chapter on economic analysis in a leading European competition law commentary. He holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Bonn, where his thesis was supervised by Martin Hellwig, a former head of the German Monopolies Commission.
